We’d promised ourselves last time that we would return to Gran Canaria to explore the centre of the Island and this year we got the chance. We stayed at the Cordial Sandy Golf bungalows in Maspalomas for a couple of weeks, which turned out to be a little gem. The weather when we arrived was cold and wet, but soon the sun returned and we enjoyed some glorious weather.
In our trusty Fiat 500, we spent a week exploring the island, racking up some serious miles. We went to Barranco de Guayadeque, a fabulous ravine where we walked up to the rim of the Caldera Los Marteles. After getting our permit, we did the splendid walk to Roque Nublo, fortunately in glorious sunshine. We took a drive to the colourful rocks at Los Azulajos and on to Aldea where we enjoyed a lovely coastal walk on my birthday. We also walked the rim of the Caldera Bandama before enjoying the beautiful sights of Aguimes. One of the highlights was the walk from Cruz de Tejede to the Cuevas de Caballero—fantastic views, including of Teide on Tenerife. It was a fantastic week of sunshine with lots of walking and the discovery of lovely little cafes for a welcome drink.
As always we mixed cooking in the bungalow with meals out and discovered the best kebab shop in Spain! Had to be done amongst the bright lights of Playa del Ingles. We did however manage to avoid this area, enjoying walks along the coast and inland behind Maspalomas as well as catching the bus to las Palmas for the day. We might have overdone it one day with our 20km walk along a dried riverbed—that pebble floor was a killer!
We may have to return as there are a couple more place on the North of the island that we still have to visit!
