The final leg of our Balkans trip. After crossing the border from Croatia, we headed for the lovely little town of Blagaj in order to visit the pretty Dervish Monastery there. Finding our apartment in Mostar was a lot easier than any of the others to date on our trip. Probably the biggest apartment we stayed at the whole time there, with enough beds for 6 people. It was a lovely place to stay with lovely hosts who lived upstairs.
The main reason for visiting Mostar was the old bridge, destroyed in the wars in the 90s and now rebuilt. And what a magnificent sight it was. We spent several evenings eating in restaurants overlooking the bridge and enjoying its splendour. There was plenty to see in Mostar. The beauty of this town was tempered by the visible signs of what happened here just over 30 years ago. Buildings riddled with bullet holes and countless war graves. A very moving time was spent in the war photo museum. Throughout Bosnia there is still a deep distrust between the various people. We found ourselves driving though areas with Croatian flags on every street and even through the Serbian Republic of Sprska, all in Bosnia & Herzegovina. For many people the situation is still very raw.
