Finally back in Tunisia. We had planned to go with the children in 2020, but COVID got in the way. This time, just the two of us made our way to this beautiful country which has had such a rough time—firstly with the shooting in 2015 and then with COVID in 2020.
Unfortunately the holiday didn’t get off to a good start. After getting our small case from the conveyor belt in Enfidha airport, we waited in vain for our main case, which had all our clothes in. We duly reported it and set off for our hotel, The Occidental Marhaba. Our first afternoon was spent at the hotel shop buying some clothes—some dodgy T-shirts, some starfish swimming shorts for me and a stripy bikini for Kathryn. Then it was off to find a supermarket for some granny knickers and some rather fetching (not) Tunisian undies!! We could have cried, but we chose to laugh and set about having a good time on holiday.
Fortunately the lovely Wahlid, Bill and Alison also lent us some clothes as well as some washing liquid, so we were Ok for the duration. Our case did turn up after 7 days, so we had clean clothes for the last couple of days.
Most of our 10 days were spent at the beach in the morning and then going for a walk in the afternoon. Evenings were spent drinking far too much wine!! We enjoyed some lovely walks along the beach and also into Sousse and north towards Port el Kantaoui. It was hard seeing so many of the hotels and tourist related shops boarded up. So many local businesses did not survive the shooting and then COVID. Such a shame.
