This trip started off as a rescheduled trip to India, but we had to change it once again after the Indian govt withdrew the eVISA for UK citizens. Very glad though because it turned out to be such a fantastic trip. We got there at the end of the rainy season, just heading into the cool season. The weather was fabulous and we even had the luxury of having our luggage turn up with us this time!
We had long since wanted to visit the ancient Mayan sites in Mexico and now we had our chance! We stayed at the Ocean Coral and Turquesa near Puerto Morelos. Far enough away from Cancun to allow for some sense of the true Mexico on the coast. The hotel was really nice—what’s not to like about an onsite coffee shop and ice cream parlour? We were well positioned for lovely walks, either along the beach or the service road behind the hotel to our favourite place—Puerto Morelos. A lovely laid back town with a great vibe to it.
The highlight of course was the trips out. We went to Tulum where we were stunned by the temples and buildings on the clifftop. We visited Coba with its tallest pyramid in the Yucatan (unfortunately they have stopped people climbing it now so didn’t get the views over the canopy). Of course we went to Chichen Itza, one of the 7 Wonders of the World. And it really does deserve that title. What an amazing place!! Spent hours wandering the different ruins. We always made sure we got to each site early, before the crowds, so we could enjoy them in peace. Other top moments included the swim in a Cenote, Margaritas on the terrace and of course the food!
