This trip came about after we had to cancel our trip to Israel due to the war there. In order to not lose our deposit, we had to transfer to another holiday with the same company. Fortunately Mauritius was an option….even if it meant travelling just 6 days after we got back from North Macedonia.
We stayed at Trou aux Biches in the North of the island at the Casuarina Resort. A perfect place to stay, surrounded by public beaches and none of the commercial tourism apparent further North.
The trip was a combination of walking, relaxing on the beach, snorkelling and exploring the island by car. The snorkelling was a little disappointing as most of the coral was dead due to the huge waves crashing on the reef further out, however we did see plenty of fish and the highlight was snorkelling with the green turtles…...amazing!!!
We travelled South to the Tamarind Falls, where we completed the cascades loop walk. This turned out to be a lot trickier than we imagined with lots of slippery descents, using trees to keep us from falling as well as lots of tricky ascents. Well worth it though. We also visited Grad Bassin, a highly spiritual place for the Hindus. In the Black River Gorge we saw the Alexandra falls as well as the falls at Charamel and the seven coloured rock formations. We then travelled to the southern most point and climbed Le Morne Brabant for the wonderful views across the island and of the bays on either side. In the North we enjoyed a walk at the wonderful Preybere Beach before visiting another temple and the red roof church at Cap Malheureux. We also had time to visit the East Coast and enjoyed some special time at Belle Mare.
Mauritius certainly lived up to its reputation as a paradise island. The staff at the hotel were so friendly, especially Niba and as well at a free massage at the spa we managed to blag a wonderful free Indian meal at the Tree Top restaurant. I do like a freebie!!!
