March was supposed to be a trip to India. Unfortunately due to India being closed because of COVID the flights were cancelled and we had to look at doing something else. Price to the Gambia were at an all time low, so we decided to go back there for a couple of weeks even though we had been there over Christmas. It was great to be back at the Palm Beach Hotel again. March weather turned out to be hot, but often with a strong wind - sometimes cold.
We did quite a lot of exploring this time. We walked to Cape Point a few times - a long 8 mile round trip, but worth it for the deserted beach and the relaxing drink at Calypso bar. It was on one of those trips that we met the teachers and pupils of Every Nation school. After buying all the children lollies, they sang us a song and then invited us to visit their school, which we did a few days later. Haddy picked us up in a Gambian Tuk Tuk and after a stop at her compound where we were introduced to the extended family we got to the school near the QCell building. It was a fun morning and quite an experience. It happened to be Commonwealth Day so all the kids were dressed up. We visited the nursery and the primary school.
Every time we went to the strip we walked, via the path round the back of the hotel and then the main road. We finally tried Sea Breeze and discovered a new Italian restaurant called Figaro. Of course we continued to visit Saffron as well as our fruit ladies, Abbie and Yai and of course Awa and Soma. It was a fantastic, relaxing holiday where we got to see more of Gambian life.
No Covid tests this time and no passenger locator forms to complete. We didn’t even have to wear masks on the flight back.
