After a couple of days in Santiago, we caught the LATAM flight to Rapa Nui. Something of a childhood dream come true and part of our South American odyssey. We were greeted on the runway by musicians playing traditional music and a grass skirt dancer. Wearing our flower garlands, we made the 200 yd journey from the airport to our hotel ... the wonderful Puku Vai. Our home for the next few days.
Nothing could have prepared us for the sight of our first Moai as we went for an afternoon stroll. Amazing. Also very lucky to be there when the canoeing championships were on near the harbour. We spent days travelling round the island visiting Moai sites and learning all about the history. Evenings were spent drinking the excellent Chile wine we had bought in Santiago airport and chatting to fellow travellers. We even got chance to go for a swim at the beautiful Anakena beach. Perfect.
