Time to visit Pippa whilst she was living out there working for idara ya mazingira. I was able to get involved in some of the work of the department, especially the community projects and working with young people and the environment. Spent time on the mainland as well as travelling to Pemba but spent most of the time on the island of Unguja, otherwise known as Zanzibar. Stayed at Pippa and Rob’s house in Bububu, just north of Zanzibar town near the school.
The top row shows me with Kassim and his family, one of the villages on the island and my two chickens, Asha and Fatuma. Then we have pictures of some dhows on the East Coast, some of the ladies I used to teach English to and Pips cutting my hair in her garden. Below that we have me playing Mancala with the guards and probably losing, another dhow shot and one of the many flights I took round and about. There are a few pictures of Pippa’s house, with me relaxing in the hammock and fixing the porch roof. A local wedding I was invited to, a shot of the market in Zanzibar town and some kids on the beach make up the bottom row.
Will never forget the mincemeat man, having no water for a month and then collecting rain water in buckets when it finally rained, trips to Pange island to go snorkelling, the coffee man on Pemba and getting arrested and put in the cells in Dar es Salaam.
